If you want to make your voice heard on mental health policy, one of the most effective ways to do that is by submitting a witness slip or providing public comment.
Illinois General Assembly (Illinois House & Senate)
All activities of the Illinois General Assembly are available online at ilga.gov.
Once you sign up for our policy action alerts, NAMI Chicago will share direct links to submit witness slips for legislation being considered. The number of slips submitted for or against a bill is an important indicator of public sentiment. Every slip counts!
Submitting a witness slip is quick and easy. Here are a few tips:
If you are submitting on behalf of an organization, include the organization name under “Representation.” If left blank, the slip will be counted as an individual submission. If filing as an individual, enter “Self.”
Select your “Position” as “Proponent” or “Opponent.” Double check that you selected the correct option.
Under “Testimony,” select “Record of Appearance Only.” You may also submit written testimony or request to speak in person if you choose.
Agree to the Terms of Agreement and click “Create (Slip).”
You will receive a confirmation email with a copy of your submission. If you create an account at my.ilga.gov, you can manage or edit your witness slips.
Chicago City Council
The Chicago City Council is made up of elected officials representing residents across the city. Information about council and committee meetings is available through the City Clerk at chicityclerkelms.chicago.gov, where you can search legislation and view the meeting calendar.
If you would like to provide oral or written comment, instructions are available on the City Clerk’s website. Many alderpersons also maintain websites and ward offices where you can learn more and connect directly.
Other Policymaking Bodies
There are additional opportunities to engage in public comment at the local level, including:
Cook County Board of Commissioners
Chicago Board of Education
